Honorary Fellowship Award
Leon Chaitow receiving honarary fellowshipOn November 17th 2005, at the Barbican Centre in London, at a graduation ceremony with an audience of some 2500 graduating students and their families,  the University of Westminster awarded me an Honorary Fellowship for 'Services to Osteopathy & Complementary Medicine'. This was a truly unexpected and humbling experience, involving as it did wearing 14th century-style robes, processing and participating in a ceremony that lasted 3 hours. The personal award segment consisted of a brief reading by the University Provost of the reasons for the award, followed by a brief address to the audience. In this I tried to give a sense of why I thought graduates should consider writing as a major part of their future careers, since to paraphrase Samuel Johnson, ' to write a single book a man must turn over half a library'. There is no more educational experience, I believe, than writing - especially if the topic is interesting and even more so if you need to know more about it to make the book authoritative! (that's where Johnson's 'half a library' comes in).

For those who have seen some of the fascinating art produced  by my daughter, Sasha, this website offers the chance to browse and to simply enjoy her paintings and, if you are of a mind, to purchase posters, cards, cushions, T-shirts, camisoles, mugs, tote-bags, notebooks etc,-  carrying images of your choice - or even original artwork.

I am no longer on staff at Westminster however I do teach there periodically, and the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies that I edit (see Journals page) is based within the School of Integrated Health (SIH).

SIH offers a unique, comprehensive programme of BSc (Honours), Masters, Diploma and short courses.

The courses in acupuncture, herbal medicine, homoeopathy, nutritional therapy and therapeutic bodywork (that I helped to design) were the first named degrees of their kind in the UK.

The School has developed the widest range of complementary therapy courses in Europe

http://www.healthy.net
HealthWorld Online (www.healthy.net) is the largest source of information on integrative medicine and alternative/complementary health care on the web. It offers thousands of articles from leading health care professionals and authors (including approximately 15 by myself) covering hundreds of health conditions and a wide range of alternative modalities.

http://www.nmtcenter.com
The NMT training centre is under the direction of Judith DeLany LMT, co-author of Clinical Applications of Neuromuscular Techniques Volumes 1 and 2, and of the soon to be published Study Guide for those texts.

Judi is also an associate editor of JBMT (see journal page).

In my opinion the NMT Centre offers the best neuromuscular therapy training in the USA

During the last sixty years, neuromuscular therapy (NMT) has emerged as a significant methodology for assessing, treating and preventing soft tissue injuries and chronic pain. NMT, a series of treatment protocols based on the practitioner's skill, anatomy knowledge and precise palpatory application, has found its home, not only in the treatment rooms of massage therapy, but also in occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, dentistry, chiropractic, osteopathic and physical medicine clinics worldwide.

NMTcan be part of a comprehensive program, complementing all other health care modalities.

CAM is an accessible professional magazine rather than a peer-reviewed scientific journal. However, it is science-based.

CAM is published monthly with unrivalled coverage of the latest news, research and political developments in complementary and alternative medicine. It covers areas such as nutrition, diet, herbal medicine, naturopathy, bodywork, homeopathy, acupuncture and the therapeutic application of mind-body research. The emphasis is to keep CAM practitioners painlessly up to date - with both science and the relevant politics - while increasing collaboration and integration. It is provided without charge to all qualified practitioners in the UK. You can register on the site for this.

The Massage Therapy Foundation is an American based public charity that aims to advance the profession of massage through community service, research and education. Their website is well worth exploring for among other things a major research database (4600 research records) and library (articles of interest and books). JBMT strongly supports the Foundation and is involved in its Case Study Competition.

http://www.positivehealth.com
Positive Health is one of the most progressive publications in Europe, with a huge website. It is a remarkable resource. I write a regular - but infrequent - column on integrated bodywork for PH, and all of these are in the archives  which you can access once you register via this link. Registration also ensures a regular newsletter from PH. If you have any problems getting access to my previous articles please email me.

To access the Positive Health articles archive, you first have to register for the PH Newsletter, which is free. At the logon, you are prompted for your email address and a password. To get a password, you need to click the register button to get a password. This brings up a tiny form to fill in with your first name, your country and your email address. You then click the subscribe (to the newsletter) button. You will then receive an email with a link to confirm that you want to register for the newsletter. Once you do that, you will receive an email with the password. From then on, at the logon, you just fill in your email address and the password, which you can save, so you don't have to remember it all the time. It really isn't complicated, if you just do each step in turn.

After logging on go to 'Articles' and on that page look in right hand column for 'Regulars'...click on that and you arrive at the page of 'Regular contributors' where you can eventually find my articles

www.massagetoday.com/columnists/chaitow.
Massage Today is a web-based American monthly publication that I write for several times a year. Access is free and the links to my previous articles should be easily located. If you have any problems accessing these please email me.

www.naturopathydigest.com.
Naturopathy Digest is a new - web based -  publication from the same organisation that produces Massage Today. Some of my articles in one appear in the other but there will also be articles unique to the ND publication. You should have no problems accessing this new naturopathic publication which reflects the rapid regrowth of that profession in the USA - California having recently become the 14th state to license NDs as first line physicians. Please email me if you have problems getting access.

www.newmedicinegroup.com
This is the website belonging to the group of practitioners with whom I work when I am in the UK.

Our practice group came together because of our shared interest in taking a holistic approach to treating a wide range of health concerns . For detailed information about our clinic, practitioners (click on individual names when you reach the site), therapies and other activities please navigate using the links on the site.

We are a group of practitioners - some medical some complementary, - who offer natural, holistic treatments plus information and advice, classes and talks on health matters.

The team is qualified to offer counselling and psychology, medical and non-medical osteopathy, medical acupuncture, naturopathy, clinical ecology (allergy), clinical nutrition, breathing pattern rehabilitation, Chinese medicine, and homeopathy

Our approach is:

* as natural as possible: such methods and remedies reinforce the body's own healing resources

* holistic : we treat each person as a whole individual, not just a set of symptoms or problems, and aim to restore balance between the different parts of the whole

* complementary to each other and to orthodox medicine: practitioners will recommend another therapist if the two therapies will work well together

* alternative to orthodox medicine: where drugs or surgery are unacceptable or have failed, we offer alternative treatments.
